Ziff-Davis carried over their comic book cover style from the pulps they published at the time, Amazing Stories and Fantastic Adventures. The stories are pretty standard 1950’s horror/sci-fi fare, but the painted covers were pretty unique for the day. I’d have to say issue #2 is the pick of the litter.

If you’re lucky enough to live near a Borders Bookstore, check the clearance aisle for a copy of Foul Play. The book profiles 16 EC creators, and includes an eight page story reprint from each of them. Retail is $29.95, but Borders has it on clearance for $4.95. Well worth picking up at that price for the story that gave the book its name, “Foul Play” (from Haunt of Fear #19, May/June 1953). If you only know Jack Davis from his work in Mad Magazine, or the assorted album and paperback covers he’s done, you owe it to yourself to check this one out. You can also get it from Amazon for $21.86 if you’re too cool for brick and mortar.
